South West Harbours

The South West has long been of great strategic and commercial importance. Mineral wealth ensured early development of export facilities, much accelerated by the industrial revolution. Ships and harbours both expanded in numbers and dimensions to accommodate the various trades, in the everlasting search for economy of scale. The rise in overseas traffic and near demise of local waterborne freight is examined herein. Local history knowledge will be enhanced with this comprehensive album of scenic views. Also featured is the Bideford, Westward Ho! & Appledore Railway, which was unusual in linking three waterfront locations.
