Scottish Main Lines
Carlisle to Beattock
Including the Dumfries branch
by Roger Darsley & Dennis Lovett
Leaving the Border city of Carlisle, the West Coast Main Line climbs through Annandale and the Southern Uplands to reach Beattock. The branch line to Dumfries provides an interesting diversion away from the main line and served some diverse industries enroute.
Reviews:
'The ‘Ultimate Rail Encyclopaedia’ is still going strong following Vic Mitchell’s passing, with this volume following the standard pattern of photographs past and present and extracts from historic OS maps.'
(The Railway Observer, Vol.92, No.1121, July 2022)
'This has to be one of the most exciting routes covered by a Middleton part work, and there is something of interest on every page - powerful locomotives, main line expresses, heavy freights, steep gradients, and spectacular scenery as well.'
(Howard Johnston, Steam World, Issue 418, April 2022)
'Here are two fine additions to the superb series that covers distinct geographical areas of our extensive railway system through historic monochrome images... Strongly recommended indeed.'
(RSS) The Railway Magazine, May 2022
[Review on Carlisle to Beattock & Alnmouth to Berwick]
'In their usual thorough fashion, they [Roger Darsley & Dennis Lovett] preface a mainly photographic album by explaining the geographical setting and historical background, telling us how the line through Annandale was operated including timetables from 1918 and a century later...
...The usual excellent value, this is one of the most interesting additions yet to an imposing series.'
The True Line (Journal of The Caledonian Railway Association), April 2022
