Northern Lines
Liverpool to Runcorn
including branches to Garston, Widnes and Warrington
by Adrian Hartless
This volume covers the lines of the former London & North Western Railway running southeast from Liverpool Lime Street. In addition to the busy London main line across Runcorn Bridge there are branches to Garston Docks, the industrial towns of Widnes and Warrington, and the route from Widnes towards St Helens. The chronology of their construction may come as a surprise.
Reviews:
'Although covering a relatively small geographical area, there is a lot of passenger and freight activity within the book, two-thirds covering the main line from Lime Street through Edge Hill and Runcorn as far as Sutton Weaver, while the rest looks at the three off-shoots...
This is a well-researched addition to the series and recommended to those interested in the area.'
(Railway Observer, Vol.92, No.1125, November 2022)
'The section of photographs across the three volumes will appeal to both young and old alike.'
(SLS Journal, November/December 2022, No.938, Vol.98 - review on Liverpool to Runcorn, Bolton to Preston & Preston to Lancaster)
'Most of the railways around the Mersey estuary are still with us today, but those endless heavy freights are no longer hauled by sturdy BR '9F' 2-10-0s, and block trains have replaced the need for acres of sidings for the marshall the long formations that were seen at the docks and heading for the now closed Fidlers Ferry power station...
Our pictorial tour calls in at Runcorn, whose transporter bridge (the UK's first and the world's longest) was replaced by the present landmark steel through arch structure in 1961.'
(Steam World, Issue 425, November 2022)
