Narrow Gauge

Romania & Bulgaria Narrow Gauge

by John Organ

Due to their location behind the Iron Curtain, Romania and Bulgaria were among the most unapproachable countries of Europe to visit during the "Cold War" period. Apart from a few enthusiasts who were able to visit the area on specially organised tours, the railway activities of both countries were shrouded in mystery for many years. Both had a significant number of 76cm and 60cm gauge railways, of which sadly very few reminders have survived.
