Country Railway Routes
Lines around Newmarket
to Ely, Cambridge and Mildenhall
by Richard Adderson
Two of the three lines covered in this book remain important parts of the railway system. One has developed into a well‑used passenger link between major centres in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, while the other has become a vital freight artery for container traffic to and from the busy terminals at Felixstowe. The conveyance of racehorses, containers and wartime explosives have all played their part in the story, and are illustrated here. By contrast, our third line was a typical country branch line, with infrequent trains linking Cambridge to rural villages. Like so many others, it disappeared during the early 1960s.
Reviews:
'Members who are collecting the series should obtain a copy especially if you are familiar with the area as the railway was of important historical significance, particularly around the unusual layout at Newmarket, and the intercity use of the line to Ely.'
(The Railway Observer, Vol.91 No.1111, September 2021)
'Newmarket has always been in the shadow of Cambridge, and is also the gateway to the cathedral city of Ely and the market town of Bury St Edmunds, and the services depicted are heading for one of these places. We are treated to many reassuring images of Worsdell 'J15' and Holden 'J17' engines, which many of us thought would go on forever.'
(Howard Johnston, Steam World, Issue 411, September 2021)
'A new book takes a closer look at the history of the rail lines around Newmarket. It is the latest in a series of more 400 railway albums, giving the reader an armchair journey along routes, many long gone, and thanks to wealth of old photographs a chance to remember stations now consigned to history.'
