Country Railway Routes

Chesterfield to Lincoln

including the Mansfield Railway

by Vic Mitchell & Keith Smith

The routes had limited passenger services and they ended in the mid-1950s. Photos of such trains are rare and thus the pictures of them herein are very pleasing. Coal mines in the area were once numerous, but they suffered rapid decline.

There are many views of the various types of locomotives used which can be enjoyed. The few trains on the Mansfield Railway mostly ran on to Ollerton.

Reviews:

[The first two reviews concern both Mansfield to Doncaster and Chesterfield to Lincoln:]

'This prolific publisher continues to produce excellent reviews of the history of railways in a particular area or on a particular line... These books are no exception, with well researched captions and generally good quality photographs. With some images being well over 100 years old, allowances have to be made for the sharpness of older ones.'
(The Journal of the Friends of the National Railway Museum, No.166, Winter 2018/19)

'Coverage in both the books is excellent and to the usual Middleton Press standards....
...the details visible of the colliery equipment etc., makes them relevant to any reader with an interest in mining locations and infrastructure, even if the purchaser's specialist interest is geographically elsewhere.'
(SLS Journal, January/February 2019, No. 915, Vol. 95)

'[This album]... abounds with photographs, maps and extracts from timetables that are of great historical content and interest. The usual informative captions accompany each photograph. The authors are so well known that their very names act as its own recommendation.'
(The Railway Observer, December 2018, Vol.88, No.1078)

'Rarely can a largely rural line have contained as much industrial interest as the Chesterfield to Lincoln route.'
(The Railway Magazine, December 2018)

'Another piece of the Middleton map has been completed.' (HJ)
(Steam World, Issue 377, November 2018)

'The reproduction of all the visual material is very good and modellers will find this volume of great use.'
(BRM Magazine, April 2019)
